Traditionally, the word Yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where Yoga originated.

In its simplest terms, yoga is an exercise system that consists of a series of poses, postures and positions. There are many forms of yoga , but Hatha is the most common. Hatha yoga includes all of the basic yoga moves and breathing exercises but doesn't include the religious or spiritual aspects of some other forms.

There are many physical, spiritual and mental benefits to Yoga.

The physical benefits: Creates a toned, flexible, and strong body. Improves respiration, energy, and vitality. Yoga helps to maintain a balanced metabolism, promotes cardio and improves circulatory health. Helps you look and feel younger than your age. Improves your athletic performance.

The mental benefits: Yoga helps you relax and handle stressful situations more easily. Teaches you how to quiet the mind so you can focus your energy where you want it to go — into a difficult yoga pose, on the tennis court or golf course, or in the office. Encourages positive thoughts and self-acceptance.

The spiritual benefits: Builds awareness of your body, your feelings, the world around you, the needs of others. Promotes an interdependence between mind, body, and spirit. Helps you live the concept of "oneness."

Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates who was born in 1880 in Germany. In order to rebuild his strength after many childhood illnesses, he devised his own method of exercise - Contrology - now better known as Pilates.

Pilates is a series of low-impact flexibility and muscle exercises. These exercises target the "powerhouse," or core muscles—stomach, back, hips, inner thighs, and buttocks—with the quality of the movement having more importance than the quantity.

Pilates works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment. It helps to reshape your body, which will become longer, leaner and more toned. It will also improve your posture, achieving the perfect balance between strength and flexibility, and it is a great way to relive unwanted stress and tension. It's slow, controlled approach means that it gives much longer-term results - and it is especially recommended by medical specialists for those with back problems.
